It always sounded to me like "We were cool on Christ," which gives the whole line a totally different meaning.
I thought that too! It was only when I checked the lyrics online that I found out it was "craze." Actually, some lyrics sites say "cries," which could also be right, but more sites listed "craze" so we went with that. Too bad--"cries" might've made a funnier headline.
